about

"Max Nordile and James Luster are real characters. Not two people pretending to be someone else but two people expanding into themselves. They’ve been friends and artists and musicians making things together and separate for longer than I’ve known anyone. I don’t know when or where ‘A Hole To Sink In’ was recorded but I know it was a good time. You can hear it from the opening riff and on into the laughter and when you stop to think you wonder if they’re laughing at us or them.
At first it’s all freewheeling and yet in the freedom patterns emerge, loops engage, a bit of the opening riff returns later. It devolves and opens up and keeps going and every now and then an ear worm turned aphid sneaks in and brings you back for repeat listens. The third track is a party and had me so confused at first I couldn’t figure out if it was them or someone else and I don’t care.
Gideons sound like if the ‘60s never happened or the ‘50s happened after. They haven’t studied but they’ve done their homework and by done I mean haven’t got the time. When 'Sweet Gf' rattles in you hear where they’re coming from and you’re going there too.
Suddenly halfway through they open up and speak and you really see now, cuz they’re telling you in layered language. They’re Gideons, a duo of two who got together in the world to bring shreds of hope and no dignity in a place at a time to offer simple messages. Don’t read too close.
The whole thing unfolds and falls into itself and rolls along until ‘Aphid March’ starts up and you think you’re sitting there too sipping on the shore. This is where the ‘50s begin back there after the ‘40s before the ‘60s or never. Less time more getting in touch.
‘Ring Stain’ loses control and chimes and whirls and there’s that laughing again and this time you’re laughing too at you. But don’t worry it’s not almost over. The third to last (before you go back to the beginning) track brings both voices out overlapping with sax. A duo of characters stamping sound onto a thin film of cassette tape jarring you awake while subtle voices scare you asleep.
‘Gid Roke’ brings us back to the beginning with guitar and bongos and attempts at hauling ass over the edge without reaching it. You’d be fine there if you found it. Take their hand and see if they’ll let you.
When they break into, or perhaps out of, ‘Mack the Knife’, you know it all. They’re a duo split in two and laughing into the universe. You snap your fingers and find the groove and you get it, it’s got you and Gideons brought you along. Laugh if you gotta cuz they ain’t done."
